A BRIEF HISTORY - THE LODGE THAT NEARLY ROARED

Freemasonry's Been Around the Block (and Then Some!)

Freemasonry got its start not long after England itself got organised back in 1717. We quickly became one of the biggest, most respected groups around, and it wasn't just for show!

  • We Were Ahead of Our Time: Back when arguing about religion was the norm, we were all about peace and tolerance. Being a good person, not your social status, was what mattered to us.
  • Big on Brains: We loved talking about science, art, and how the world works – and how WE could make it better.

Get ready for a tale of true Yorkshire grit! Back in 1992, Worshipful Brother Ron Lewis had a dream of starting a new lodge.

He even had a cool name picked out – the "Leonine Lodge" (meaning "lion-like"). But there were obstacles:

  • Convincing Those At The Top: The Provincial Grand Master of Freemasonry in the area wasn't wholly convinced Castleford actually needed a second lodge.
  • There Was No Where To Meet: The lodge meeting hall had been compulsory purchased, and was no more!

Most folks would give up, but not Ron! For four years, he rallied the troops, made new friends, and never lost sight of his goal.


Finally, after a new meeting hall was built, the powers-that-be had a change of heart (or maybe they just got tired of Ron's persistence!).

On April 13th, 1996, a historic meeting was held for our lodge. It's where our story really begins and where our name came from. It was decided that our lodge would be "Caldaire" (where two rivers, the Calder and the Aire meet!), and the rest, as they say, is history.
